Nov. 17 is Children’s Grief Awareness Day

Nov. 102022

WATERVILLE – Children’s Grief Awareness Day is Thursday, Nov. 17.
Those who would like to show their support can do so by wearing blue. Children’s Grief Awareness Day acknowledges grieving children and helps people learn ways to support them.
Most children and teens will experience the death of a parent, close family member or friend before they reach 18. Often, their grief is overlooked or goes unrecognized. The first step in helping children through grief is to simply listen and let them know they are not alone.
Hospice Volunteers of Waterville Area’s Hope’s Place, 304 Main St., is a safe place for grieving children. The program provides a supportive environment for grieving children, teens, and families through peer support groups. The groups nurture and encourage expression of grief and loss in a safe welcoming environment.
For information, contact Jillian Roy at 207-873-3615 ext.11 or jroy@hvwa.org.
Hospice Volunteers of Waterville Area serves 27 communities in central Maine, providing nonmedical support to individuals and their families during the last phases of life, to loved ones throughout the grieving process, and to educate the community on issues related to death and grieving. Bereavement services are available to anyone who has sustained loss either through illness or unexpectedly. HVWA is volunteer-based and community funded.
