What it means to be a successful Representative

Sep. 202022

By David Boyer

If elected to represent the towns of Poland and Mechanic Falls, success would mean being available, transparent, and honest with my constituents. There is nothing worse than a politician who isn’t accountable and honest with voters. You will always know where I stand, even if we disagree. I give out my personal cellphone number and email to every voter I meet and encourage them to use it.
In a practical sense, success would mean my constituents’ lives would be changed for the better. This could mean keeping more of their hard-earned money, fixing the roads, or helping navigate government bureaucracy. Success also means truly helping small businesses thrive and ensuring they can rebound from the damage caused by the pandemic. Almost daily, we hear of a new business shuttering their doors. The workforce shortage in Maine desperately needs to be addressed.
I am honored to have already started serving my constituents as I have been going door-to-door meeting them. Many were not aware of the recently passed “Property Tax Stabilization Program,” which will allow seniors to freeze their property taxes for homes that they have lived in for the last 10 years. Folks have been grateful for the information and the application, and I am grateful for the opportunity to help them save money. Now it is up to the next legislature to ensure the program is funded for years to come, hopefully by cutting wasteful government spending.
