Consumer fireworks are legal in Maine, but many towns and cities have their own ordinances regarding use of consumer fireworks – check maine.gov/dps/fmo/inspections/fireworks/ordinances to find out if your town is one of them.
Even in towns and cities that don’t have their own ordinances, there are still state laws that must be followed:
• Consumer fireworks may only be used between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m. except July 4, Dec. 31 and the weekends before and after July 4 and Dec. 31, when the hours of use are extended until 12:30 a.m.
• They can only be used on your own private property or the property of a person who has consented to their use.
• Those under 21 may not buy, use or possess consumer fireworks.
Violation of fireworks law is a civil offense that carries a fine and court costs.
Keep in mind that while you may be on vacation, neighbors may have to get up for work, have young children, have pets that may be traumatized by fireworks, or may have issues themselves that make fireworks difficult to tolerate. Be a good neighbor and respect those around you.
