AUGUSTA – Health Living for ME is hosting free workshops on living with chronic pain and HIV, both of which begin June 16.
Mainers who are living with the conditions addressed in the workshops, as well as caregivers or supports, may participate. Healthy Living for ME also welcomes referrals from health care providers; the evidence-based workshops can help patients manage and prevent conditions before they become more serious or result in emergency situations.
• Living Well with Chronic Pain will be held in person at Alfond Youth & Community Center, 126 North St., Waterville. It is designed for people who are dealing with persistent pain such as back pain, post-surgical pain, headaches, and other ongoing pain. Topics covered include dealing with frustration, fatigue, isolation, and poor sleep; appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength; appropriate use of medications; communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals; nutrition; pacing activity and rest; and evaluating new treatments.
• Living Well with HIV+ will be held online, and is designed for individuals managing HIV and their caregivers/natural supports. Topics covered include medication management; techniques to deal with frustration, fear, fatigue, pain and isolation; communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals; sex, intimacy, and disclosure; nutrition; evaluating symptoms; advanced directives; and decision-making. Program participants make weekly action plans, share experiences, and help each other solve problems they encounter in creating and carrying out their self-management program.
Participants of online workshops who do not have the necessary technology may be eligible to borrow an iPad from Healthy Living for ME in order to participate.
Registration is required for both workshops. Contact Healthy Living for ME at 1-800-620-6036 or info@healthylivingforme.org for more information and to register, or visit website, www.healthylivingforme.org.
