WELD — Nancy Crosby has a varied background – she has a bachelor’s degree from Glen Cove Bible College, a masters in elementary education from North Florida University and another one in business administration from Husson University. She’s taught first grade, worked in computer hardware support and software writing, has worked for Mass. Mutual Life Insurance, Emery Waterhouse and Bates College.
But these days, she’s putting the master gardener title she earned from the University of Maine Cooperative Extension in 2006 to work – she’s owner of Blu Vue in Weld, selling perennials, annuals and vegetables. She’s been running the business at 586 West Side Road since 2009.
“I knew that eventually I would stop work as a programmer, and I enjoy being outside and like plants and the challenge of being an entrepreneur in a rural setting,” Crosby says.
Her special niche is perennials and shrubs, but she’s also now moving into fruit trees.
“I also sell fabulous soil for growing these perennials,” she said. It’s $5 for a 5-gallon bucket. Customers bring their spade and bucket and dig their own.
The self-service outdoor stand is open every day, as long as there’s daylight, with customers leaving cash or a check in the cash box at the stand.
Crosby says that her business model allows her to sell great plants at a fraction of what people would pay at almost any other greenhouse. New products, including fruit trees, are being added for 2022.
