WATERVILLE — Ware-Butler Building Supply has donated $7,070 in materials, windows and doors to construct a ski hut for Quarry Road Trails. The donation will help the city’s goal of reopening ski operations at this location.
Quarry Road is a year-round outdoor recreational area for people of all ages and abilities from the greater Waterville area and across Maine. The first ski lift there was a 1,200-foot rope tow that opened to the public in January 1938. During the energy crisis of the 1970s, downhill ski operations were suspended, and the area was abandoned.
Friends of Quarry Road and Waterville Parks and Recreation teamed up to develop an affordable downhill ski experience for the greater Waterville community by installing a rope tow on the slopes of the former Colby Ski Area for this winter.
“Ware-Butler wanted to show our support for this effort and donate time and materials to build a ski hut,” company officials said. “After several days of work, our employees have nearly completed the building on the Quarry Road Trails. The ski hut is expected to be finished by the end of the month.”
