Waterville hospice volunteers grief support, volunteer training to start

WATERVILLE — Hospice Volunteers of Waterville Area will offer a four-week grief support group for those grieving the loss of a loved one, beginning May 20, and begins certified hospice volunteer training May 10.
Support group meetings provide a time for sharing and receiving peer support from those who have experienced a loss. The group will meet 6 to 8 p.m. Thursdays beginning May 20. They are free, and will be held in the Hospice Volunteers of Waterville Area Healing Garden, 304 Main St.

The hospice is also offering a 24-hour Zoom volunteer training course in May covering a variety of end-of-life issues. The training is for those who would like to be a hospice volunteer, or those who want o serve your neighbors or family members facing terminal illness, providing a knowledge of the benefits and use of hospice care. There is a small fee for the training.
Topics to be covered include: hospice history and philosophy, effective communication skills, emotional and spiritual needs of the dying and bereaved, patient care and comfort, grief and loss and volunteer self-care.
The eight sessions are 6 to 8:30 p.m. Monday May 10, 17, 24 and Wednesday May 12, 19, 26; and 1 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday May 26, 23.

Hospice Volunteers of Waterville Area serves 27 communities in central Maine, providing nonmedical support to individuals and their families during the last phases of life, to loved ones throughout the grieving process and to educate the community on issues related to death and grieving.
