WATERVILLE — The Boys & Girls Clubs and YMCA of Greater Waterville at the Alfond Youth & Community Center have announced the April 1 induction of Amy Bernatchez as the 2021-23 board chair and welcomed David Lockman to the board of directors.
An outdoor enthusiast, Bernatchez has been actively involved with the center for more than 25 years, from chairing the Wellness Committee to developing the overnight field hockey camp; her boundless energy and positive spirit makes her a vital and valued leader.
Bernatchez has lived in Belgrade Lakes for more than 35 years, been married to her high school sweetheart Brian for 29 of those years, and raised two daughters and a son — Katie, Kristy and Jackson.
“They grew up at the AYCC’s Camp Tracy, running those fields, learning to swim in McGrath Pond, and experiencing the values of camp life,” she recalled.
A former field hockey star and coach, from elementary to collegiate levels, Bernatchez is now an agent at Lakepoint Realty and sees great similarities between her two careers. “To be successful in either you have to be well prepared, committed to working hard, able to handle unforeseen challenges, and know what it takes to win,” she explained.
These are the values Bernatchez wants to instill in the community’s at-risk teens by spearheading an enhanced teen program at the AYCC. “We can’t lose these kids once they turn thirteen,” she said, because “that is the most vital time to provide mentoring and support to usher them into their brighter futures!”
Joining the AYCC board of directors this year is David Lockman, director of Real Estate and Construction at L.L.Bean since the fall of 2000. Born in Worcester, Mass., Lockman grew up in East Sebago, graduated from Worcester Academy, and attended Worcester Technical Institute for his undergraduate degree and University of Southern Maine for his graduate degrees in engineering and management.
Lockman worked throughout Maine at IDEXX Labs, Gabriel Electronics and Hussey Seating Company before joining L.L.Bean and settling in Vassalboro with his wife and sons — Dameron and Dominic.
Though currently serving on the board of directors for the Freeport Economic and Development Corporation, Lockman is very excited to join AYCC’s board of directors to help make a difference in his own community.
“I am most excited to be serving on the Steering Committee of the Community Recreation Arena the AYCC is planning to build, complete with a full sheet of ice for five months of the year,” he said. “Ice hockey is a real passion of mine, so working on a project to bring that passion to the kids of Central Maine, especially underprivileged youth, is a real thrill.”
