The Blaine House, at the corner of Capitol and State streets, in Augusta, has been the governor’s residence since 1919. It was built in 1833 by ship captain James Hall, and was the residence of James Blaine, who bought it in 1862 when he was Maine’s speaker of the house. Blaine later was U.S. secretary of state. His daughter, Harriet Blaine Beale, donated it to the state in 1919 and the first governor to occupy it was Carl Milliken, in 1921. The house was named a National Historic Landmark in 1964. If you look closely at the photo directly below, you can see the closest tree is decorated with Maine license plates. The last photo is the view from the Maine State House, across the street.
