ALFRED — Powered by the voluntary contributions of its more than 5,200 working men and women across New England, the International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) Local 4 Charitable Foundation,Inc. and Social Action Committee presented a check to the Maine State Troopers Foundation at a brief, COVID-safe check presentation recently.
Represented by IUOE Local 4’s Business Manager William D. McLaughlin and Business Agent Robert Burr, what has become a yearly gift to the Troopers Foundation has taken on a special meaning in 2020, since the untimely loss of both organizations’ mutual friend, supporter, and colleague, former Maine State House Speaker John Richardson in June. This year, IUOE’s annual contribution was made in memory of Speaker Richardson.
“While we celebrate the somber occasion of our first holiday without our friend, we do so with a renewed commitment to serving the community; during this season and each and every day,” McLaughlin said. “May this contribution to the Maine State Troopers Foundation not only assist families in dire need of the wide range of support the Foundation provides, but also spur others to think of how they can help meet the needs of their neighbors who have struggled this year. We also hope that John’s legacy of community service shines as an eternal example of how one generous heart, though gone too soon, can impact the lives of countless individuals.”
2020 marked the third year that IUOE Local 4 has donated to the Maine State Troopers Foundation. Through the years, IUOE Local 4 has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to charities throughout our region. Supporting those working to end homelessness, fight cancer, battle substance use disorder and empower those with functional needs, along with dozens more entities serving thousands in need in every corner of New England, IUOE’s members truly believe that service starts at home and in the community.
