WATERVILLE — Elizabeth Finch, the Lunder curator of American Art at the Colby College Museum of Art, has been elected to the Waterville Creates! Board of Directors.”As valued member of the board, Beth will help lead the efforts of Waterville Creates! as it works toward building a strong future for the arts in greater Waterville,” the organization said in a news release.
“It’s an exciting time for the arts here in Waterville and I’m honored to be playing a role in shaping our community’s future through my work on the board,” said Finch. “I’m very involved with the arts community and this gives me a unique perspective on Maine’s creative economy that I believe will be of use to the board. I’m excited by the new opportunities emerging in our community and artists are key to that future.”
Waterville Creates! Board President Larry Sterrs said, “Beth is well known and established in Waterville’s art scene and is incredibly generous with her time and experience — we are thrilled she’s joined our board. Her impressive skill set and collaborative focus will serve the board well in the years to come as we continue to partner with Colby College and the Colby College Museum of Art in downtown Waterville.”
Finch, who was elected Feb. 28, earned a bachelor of arts degree in art history from the University of California at Berkeley, a Ph.D. from the Graduate Center, City University of New York, and is an alumna of the Center for Curatorial Leadership. She joined the Colby museum in 2008, and co-curated Art at Colby, a museum-wide installation of the collection to mark the museum’s 50th anniversary. She was also part of the curatorial team in charge of the inaugural installation of Alfond-Lunder Family Pavilion, a major expansion completed in 2013.
Her current projects include the exhibition Marsden Hartley’s Maine, co-organized with the Metropolitan Museum in New York, where it opened on March 15. The show will move to the Colby College Museum of Art from July 8 through Nov. 12. Before the Colby Museum, Finch worked in the curatorial department at the Whitney Museum and then as curator of The Drawing Center in New York.
Finch also is a member of the Common Street Arts Advisory Committee.
