PORTLAND — For more than four decades, Frank W. Abagnale has advised the FBI on how to outsmart con artists, and now he’s coming to Maine April 20 to help Mainers learn how to spot and avoid scams. As one of the world’s most respected authorities on forgery, embezzlement and secure documents, Abagnale has joined forces with the AARP Fraud Watch Network and AARP Maine.
Between the ages of 16 and 21, Abagnale successfully posed as an airline pilot, an attorney and a doctor, cashing millions in fraudulent checks. He was eventually caught, and his exploits were depicted in the movie “Catch Me If You Can,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks. Today, Abagnale is an expert on the subject of identity theft, has written three books on the subject, and serves as a consultant to some of the largest companies in the world on the subject of cybercrime.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m, and the program begins at 6:45 p.m. at Hannaford Hall at the University of Southern Maine’s Abromson Center, 88 Bedford St. The event is free and open to the public, and parking is free in the adjacent garage.
