BETHEL — The Mahoosuc Land Trust will host a weekend of fun during the Full Snow Moon, Feb. 7 and 8. All events start at Mahoosuc Land Trust’s Valentine Farm, 162 North Road.
For those interested in birds, including walks, movies, field trips, lectures – either as a beginner or experienced – the trust is looking for input on what types of things to add to its growing bird program. At 5:30 p.m. Friday, Feb 7, the trust is holding a session to create a calendar of events and discuss other opportunities to grow the birding community. The session is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
Beginning Birding 101, for those interested in becoming bird-watchers, will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 8. The program will help participants identify birds in their yards and western Maine. This class will take some of the mystery out of identifying birds by demonstrating simple tips, techniques and tools used by experienced birders. The class is perfect for beginners as well as those with some bird watching experience.
It will be lead by James Reddoch, who writes the Bethel Citizen’s weekly “Mahoosuc Bird Notes.” The session is free and open to the public, but space is limited.
For others who’d like to get outdoors, the trust is hositn a full moon snowshoe hike followed by a fire and refreshments to celebrate the completion of the McCoy-Chapman Forest acquisition. Two options for hikes, and one bonfire, are planned. Those particpating may meet at the Valentine Farm parking lot 15 minutes before the scheduled start of their chosen hike. The hikes and bonfire are free and open to the public.
Option 1: 5 p.m., Storyteller Paul Handlen will lead a hike up to the overlook for a great view of the moon. Total length of hike is two miles with some steep sections. Bring fully charged headlamp and snowshoes. Snowshoes for anyone in need are available thanks to True North Adventureware at 196 Walkers Mills Road (Route 26).
Option 2: 6:30 p., Kirk Siegel will lead a gentle walk on the new Esker Loop. Total length is 1 mile on flat, easy terrain.
The bonfire is at 7:30 p.m. in the field along the river, and will feature cocoa and desserts.
