WINSLOW — A chance to visit with the library’s robots, technology help, fairy-drawing. fact-checking for teens and more are scheduled for the week of April 9 to 15 at Winslow Public Library to mark National Library Week.
The library is joining libraries in schools, campuses and communities nationwide in celebrating the week, which marks the many ways libraries are transforming their communities every day through the services and invaluable expertise they offer, library officials said in a news release. The week highlights the changing role libraries, librarians and library workers.
“Libraries aren’t only a place of quiet study, but also creative and engaging community centers,” said the release.
Libraries of all types are evolving to meet the needs of the communities they serve. “Elected officials, small business owners, students and the public at large depend upon libraries and the resources they offer to address the needs of their communities,” the release noted. “By providing such resources as e-books and technology help, computers and Internet access for job seekers or a safe haven in times of crisis, libraries and librarians transform their communities.”
Winslow Library Director Pamela Bonney added, “The library embraces the entire community, offering unlimited opportunities for personal growth and lifelong learning. Libraries level the playing field for people of any age who are seeking the information and access to technologies that will improve their quality of life.”
Libraries also offer the unique expertise of individual librarians, who assist patrons in using increasingly complex technology and sorting through the potentially overwhelming mass of information bombarding today’s digital society, the release said. This is especially crucial when access to reliable and trustworthy data is more important than ever.
On Tuesday, April 11, the library will host two programs to mark National Library Week: Monkey Mischief Storytime, 10 to 11 a.m., which celebrates our monkey friends; and “Do Fairies Bring the Spring?” author talk by Liza Gardner Walsh and illustrator Hazel Mitchell, who will read from their work and demonstrate how to create a mini fairy garden and how to draw fairies, 3 to 4 p.m.
Wednesday, April 12, drop-in technology help will be offered from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m.
On Thursday, April 13, join Appy Hour from 4 to 6 p.m., a discussion of favorite apps for smartphones and tablets.
Friday, April 14 programs are Lego Club, 2:30 to 4 p.m., for children kindergarten through 12th grade; and “True or False? Fact-Checking for Teens,” 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., which shows how to better separate facts and fiction, and will include pizza, trivia, and fact-checking skills tests, for teens in grades six through 12.
On Saturday, April 15, “Robot Time with Dash & Dot,” will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. Register to play with the library’s new robots. There will be half-hour sessions for groups of three or four, and it’s open to grades kindergarten through eight. The library will attempt to group children with those of similar ages.
