BETHEL — Jacob Holt Lovejoy’s diaries, dating from 1863 to 1892, provide an enlightening, in-depth view of daily life in Albany–a small, western Maine township–during the second half of the nineteenth century and are on display at the Bethel Historical Society.
Six of Lovejoy’s small but highly detailed diaries now reside in the collection of the historial society, said a news release from the society. “Thanks to the efforts of Michael S. Stowell, who has painstakingly transcribed, edited, and annotated the diaries, they now appear for the first time in published form,” the release said.
In addition to running a general store, Jacob Holt Lovejoy (1812-1893) served in the Civil War, was the first postmaster at the Albany post office, and was one of the first teachers at the Albany school. Lovejoy also served his town at various times as a treasurer and selectmen, and was a deacon of his church and justice of the peace.
Born in Locke Mills, Stowell has added many additional insights, the release said, including a genealogical narrative of the Lovejoy family, “which make this volume an indispensable resource for all those interested in the history of the area.” Fully indexed, the 314-page book contains several photographs and maps. It is available from the Museum Shop at Museums of the Bethel Historical Society, either in person or through the organization’s website.
