The most challenging part about setting goals is the simple question of how to cover the distance from where you are now to where you’d like to be in a realistic time-frame. This journey can seem immensely far and daunting, but can eventually be completed as a series of smaller, incremental steps. As the Chinese philosopher, Lao Tzu, said, “the journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” This article will share with you how to take that first step.

First, set a goal. Use the SMART principle to define your goal, which stands for: Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-Bound. So instead of simply deciding to “lose weight” decide how much weight you want to lose and in what time frame.
Next, be sure to write down your goal. By doing so, you solidify in your brain what you plan to accomplish. If writing isn’t appealing to you, tell everyone you know. Although this can seem scary having well-wishers to hold you accountable places pressure on you to follow through on your goal. Pressure can do one of two things–crush objects or make diamonds.
The second step in attaining your goal is breaking the goal down into steps. Losing any amount of weight is a daunting task to most people. Breaking the goal down into smaller steps allows you to achieve milestones, which can do wonders to boost morale and help you feel motivated to continue.
A common method for clients is to “reverse engineer” their goal. Start with end in mind, and work backwards to figure how to get there. What steps did you take to get to your goal? What milestones did you hit? When did you hit those milestones? Those answers will lead you towards your goal.
The last step in attaining your goal is to prioritize your day with daily actions that move you closer to your goals. Achieving goals will not happen without consistent action and effort. Since achieving optimal weight is the main goal, plan your meals. Check the menu in restaurants ahead of time if you plan to eat out. Plan your exercise regimen whether it’s at home or at the gym. Anticipate the inevitable obstacles that come with any goals and how you will overcome them. It can help you break the unconscious decision to give in or choose a different path.
The focus of the last step is to become disciplined in your daily actions. As Gandhi said, “Action expresses priorities.”
You may find that doing daily actions towards your goal will automatically change your environment in many ways, aiding you in your goal. You will find people who support you. You will no longer keep foods that tempt you nearby. You will enjoy the journey of exercise and find that it doesn’t have to be a grueling experience.
In summary, decide what your goals are. Create milestones towards them And then prioritize your daily actions towards your goals. These simple steps will ensure that you are successful.
