Because of the basic decency and civility of the many voters I have talked with as I’ve knocked on doors in Mechanic FallS, Minot, New Gloucester and Poland, I am more encouraged now than ever that we can get through this period of intense division in our state.
Respectful conversations have turned up three issue areas:
1. Public trust — “How come they can’t play nice in Augusta?” “Why don’t voter initiatives become law?” “Why such partisan fighting at the end of sessions?”
2. Healthcare — The cost of medicine, increased deductibles, decreased coverage and the opioid crisis – how it affects family and friends.
3. Taxes — Everyone complains about those. Real estate taxes have steadily increased because the state has not met its obligations to schools or in revenue sharing. Communities then must raise funds by going to property owners with increases in real estate taxes. This has been particularly hard on our elderly and other fixed-income households.
The answers to these questions lie in the center of the political spectrum. We need to bring people and good ideas together to work on these very important issues. It will take a lot of effort and time to find common ground. I’ve knocked on more than 8,000 doors so far, so you can trust I will work hard to represent you in Augusta. I hope I have earned that trust and your vote in November.
