Library e-book system changes coming March 1 to L/A libraries

Feb. 172017

LEWISTON-AUBURN – For years, members of Lewiston and Auburn public libraries have enjoyed the convenience of checking out e-books and digital audiobooks through the statewide download library. On March 1, the Maine InfoNet download library will be moving to a brand new e-book and e-audiobook platform called cloudLibrary.

This will replace the Overdrive platform being used now. The current system, managed by Overdrive, will be turned off on Feb. 28, and the cloudLibrary will be launched the very next day.

Once the system is live on March 1, users will be able to simply download the new app for their devices by going to libraryla.org/ebooks and follow the links to login via their library.

With this transition to the cloudLibrary, the download library will continue to offer readers nearly all of the current collection of more than 10,000 digital titles that are already in the download library plus new titles and additional copies of popular titles.

The cloudLibrary will offer patrons an app-based user experience that makes it easier to download e-books and e-audiobooks. The cloudLibrary app highlights the best and freshest titles in the collection, and also allows for patron customization.

Users of Kindle devices should be advised that the Kindle Fire (second generation or newer) works with the cloudLibrary, but e-ink Kindles do not.
To help the community with this transition, the Lewiston Public Library will offer open drop-in help sessions from 5 to 7 p.m. March 1 and 2. The Auburn Public Library will have staff available for drop in help throughout the first week of March. Library members need only bring their device and their library card; no appointment is necessary.

In addition, both libraries will continue to offer one-on-one appointments with librarians for anyone seeking help with the download library outside of these hours.

For more information, please contact the Adult and Teen Services Department at the Lewiston Public Library: 207-513-3135 or LPLReference@Gmail.com; or the Auburn Public Library at 333-6640, ext. 4, or reference@auburnpubliclibrary.org.
