WATERVILLE — Bringing together filmmakers across the globe, the Maine International Film Festival will offer audiences a glimpse inside the creative process of acclaimed international filmmakers as they make Waterville their home away from home for 10 days.
The 21st annual festival runs Friday, July 13, through Sunday, July 22.
Throughout the festival filmmakers from Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico will show their work and discuss their creative process and the state of international film. The World Filmmakers’ Forum was launched as a pilot program at MIFF 2015 with funding provided by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts’ Art Works program. While MIFF has always been committed to presenting international films and to bringing international guests to the festival, organizers say that the NEA grant allowed them to expand the effort.
According to Festival director Mike Perreault, “The World Filmmakers’ Forum brought such an exciting energy to our Festival when we first organized it in 2015. We made a promise that year to the audience that it would become an integral programming element of the festival, and we are certainly delivering on that promise this year too.”
“This is an amazing opportunity to bring in current, exciting filmmakers from across the globe to present their work to our audience,” said Festival programming director Ken Eisen. “In addition to some incredible foreign filmmakers, this year’s MIFF also has some amazingly talented international actors and performing artists, including the incomparable Dominique Sanda, who is originally from France but made an impact on the cinema through Italian films and now lives in Uruguay, and the fan-favorite VJ Suave new media artists from Brazil. We’re an embarrassment of riches this year.”
Joining MIFF for the World Filmmakers’ Forum in Waterville this July are:
* Producer Santiago Gallelli of Argentina, screening The Queen of Fear on July 15 and 18 and Zama on July 17;
* Director Juliana Rojas of Brazil, screening Hard Labor on July 22 and Good Manners on July 20 and 21;
* Director Alana Simões of Mexico, screening Mi Hermano on July 16 and 20 and “Yo Dual,” “Marti,” and “Mexican Dream Trailer” on July 14.
