WATERVILLE — The Rotary Club of Waterville will celebrate 100 years of serving local and global communities at a centennial gala event in October, featuring George Mitchell as its keynote speaker.
Mitchell, a Waterville native, is a former U.S. senator who served as Senate majority leader, among many other roles.
An evening of dinner, music, dancing, celebration and camaraderie will bring the community together to celebrate the Rotary Club of Waterville’s centennial and the club’s impact on the world and here in the city, including a donation of $150,000 to the development of the Waterville Riverwalk at Head of Falls.
The donation was the first major commitment to the project, drawing attention to the opportunity and kicking off a wave of donations from community and business leaders that has made this dream into a reality for the community in 2018.
“The Waterville Noontime Rotary Club has been an integral part of the City of Waterville’s history for over a century, with a commitment to service above self and the city’s betterment, working across barriers when division is easier,” said Waterville Rotary Club President Buffy Higgins. “We share a vision with Rotarians around the world; together we see a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change — across the globe, in our communities, and in ourselves. Our Club’s keystone investment in the Head of Falls Riverwalk Project realizes that vision perfectly.”
She said the group is humbled to have Mitchell addressing the centennial event. “We cannot think of a better representative of Rotarian ideals.”
Besides his career as a senator, Mitchell served for several years as chairman of DLA Piper, was a federal judge and was chairman of peace negotiations in Northern Ireland, which resulted in an agreement that ended a historic conflict. He was most recently, as U.S. special envoy to the Middle East.
In 2008 Time magazine described him as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Mitchell has authored five book, most recently his memoir, “The Negotiator: Reflections on an American Life,” published in May 2015, and “A Path To Peace,” published in November 2016.
The Rotary Club of Waterville Centennial Gala will be from 5:30 to 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Thomas College. Live music will be provided by The Hello Josephines. There will be a dinner buffet. The event is open to the public.
