LEWISTON — Public works employees recently installed the city’s first ADA-compliant picnic table — meeting the standards established by the Americans with Disabilities Act — at Pettingill School Park on Central Avenue.
The table will accommodate up to three persons with wheelchairs. The Friends of Pettingill bought the bench with money raised in remembrance of Jim Craven, who retired from General Electric and later served as a volunteer at Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice.
His wife of 50 years, Margaret Craven, is a member of the Friends of Pettingill Steering Committee.
The Nick Knowlton Memorial Bench was also installed at Pettingill School Park by employees of Lewiston Public Works, including Reggie Poussard, Thomas Couillard and Matt Pelletier.
The plaque on the bench reads “In Memory of Daniel ‘Nick’ Knowlton, Lewiston’s Rock ‘n Roll Legend – July 16, 1951-June 23, 2017.”
His children, Nicholas and Krista Knowlton, were the first to be seated there. One of their father’s microphones was placed in the cement beneath the bench.
