FAIRFIELD — Some Fairfield-area legislators attended a school assembly on Monday, Feb. 6, at Lawrence High School. The assembly was held with AT&T and in conjuncture with the Secretary of State’s Office to warn students of the dangers of texting while driving as part of the It Can Wait program.
In attendance were Maine Sen. Scott Cyrway (R-Kennebec), Rep. John Picchiotti (R-Fairfield), Rep. Catherine Nadeau (D-Winslow), Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap, Fairfield Police Chief Tom Gould and Owen Smith, a representative of AT&T.
Cyrway and Picchiotti both took a few moments to greet the students and discuss with them the dangers of texting while driving.
Dunlap and Smith then presented the program, sharing stories and statistics about the dangerous consequences of texting while driving.
“One out of every four accidents in the United States are caused by texting and driving, which means that one out of every four accidents are 100 percent preventable,” Cyrway said. “I was glad to have the opportunity to share this message with students in Fairfield. Even if our talk prevents only one accident, it was well worth it.”
