Benefit for Inland’s Lakewood raises nearly $50,000

WATERVILLE — Belly-busting laughs and a generous spirit of giving filled the room at the eighth annual May Day Auction, held on May 10 to benefit care at Lakewood, a continuing care center on the Inland Hospital campus.

Nearly $50,000 was raised to support nursing home residents’ summer overnight trip to Belfast, Lakewood’s Residents’ Activity Endowment Fund, and equipment needs at the 105-bed long-term care, skilled nursing and rehabilitation facility, according to the hospital.
“This year’s auction raised funds that will directly enhance Lakewood residents’ quality of life,” says John Dalton, president of Inland Hospital. “The great turnout for the event shows that Lakewood is a source of pride for the community. We couldn’t be more thankful for the community’s support.”
Auctioneer Marie Cormier and her daughter Karen entertained as they convinced those in attendance to bid frequently for weekend getaways, an iPad, and more. A Cabbage Island Clambake experience was particularly popular, resulting in a bidding war and eventually going for many times its value.
The summer trip to the coast funded by the auction is a highlight for many residents, as are the other activities that the auction supports. This year, proceeds will also be used to purchase stand-assist lifts, which help residents safely transfer between bed, chair, and commode. The lifts also reduce staff injuries.
