WATERVILLE — The Waterville Public Library has several evens planned in May for young and old alike, including a free comic book event and a panel about the history of Maine’s Jewish population.
The library will host Free Comic book Day from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 5.
Free Comic Day is a national event in which participaiting specialty shops and libraries across North America and around the world give away comic books absolutely free to anyone who comes into their shops and libraries.
Free comics will be handed out while they last. Costumes are encouraged, but not required.
There will also be a cosplay challenge. Using art supplies and reclaimed materials, participants will be challenged to create a cosplay in a hour or less. After the event, pictures of the cosplays will be posted to the library’s Facebook page, and the picture with the most “likes” wins a prize. All skill levels are welcome.
The event is free and open to the public.
From 1 to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 4, artist and illustrator Russ Cox will instruct participants on how to make a monster or super hero selfie. Participants can make themselves into a comic book character or draw a friend as one. All ages may take part.
The event will be in the Fireplace room after Free Comic Book Day.
On Tuesday, May 8, the library will host a panel of Colby College students who will share stories about Maine Jewish-Franco relations in the early 20th century, Jewish back to the landers and Jewish artists.
Presenters will be Colby sudents Ling Ding, Sam Sessions, Sarah Shoer, and Maine State Museum representative Amy Waterman. The panel will be moderated by David Freidenreich, Colby College
