ATHENS — Through a grant from the Natural Resources Council of Maine, students participating in 4-H Club at Athens Community School are learning about local wildlife and monitoring its behavior.
Middle school students, guided by teacher Kassie Dwyer, will build wildlife houses and set up game cameras on land near the school.
The students will monitor and observe the variety of creatures that pass by the game cameras or otherwise make their presence known. Once they have completed their work, students will share their findings with the younger members of the 4-H Club and the Athens community.
Students at Athens Community School are among those at eight schools throughout the state to receive one of NRCM’s middle school grants. The purpose of these grants is to help Maine students carry out hands-on, outdoor conservation learning experiences that focus on healthy waters, forests and wildlife, climate and clean energy, and a sustainable Maine.
