BRUNSWICK — Students of St. John’s Catholic School participated in Read Across America, a national initiative to motivate students to get excited about reading in similar ways pep rallies are held to get kids excited about sport events.
This concept was founded by the National Education Association and launched March 2, 1998.
It is the nation’s largest reading event occurring each year on or near author Theodore Geisel’s (Dr. Suess’) birthday. Studies show children who are successful readers do better in school and are more likely to advance with later achievements.
Kiara Brown — author, illustrator and publisher of “Princess Pretend and Not Knight” — held a Skype session with the students. This story takes readers on a journey motivating them to be themselves and appreciate their uniqueness. Being in high school herself, Brown was an inspiration to St. John’s students to continue writing stories.”After multiple — thousands — of drafts you might publish a book; you never know,” she told them.
Other events included dress as a favorite book character, teacher’s door decorating, Reader’s Theater performances, a Reader’s Family Night, guest readers throughout the day, peer reading, and more.
