BETHEL — The Mahoosuc Land Trust’s speaker series “A Day in the Life” will feature Caroline Blair-Smith of Mornington Crescent Sled Dogs at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 21.
Smith will share the life of a dog-sledder and bring one of her dogs. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be at McLaughlin Auditorium on the Gould Academy Campus.
Blair-Smith and Andy Bartleet have worked for Hurricane Island Outward Bound school since the 1990s. Their first sled dog puppy joined their family in 1999 and many more have followed. They have offered sled-dog tours since 2004. They ran their first 250-mile race, the Can-Am Crown, in 2005. Their winter is now divided between their day jobs, tours, racing and running dogs just for fun.
For thousands of years, dogs have been essential in northern regions for transportation, hunting and protection. Now, dog teams are primarily recreational and educational. Blair-Smith will share the ways their dogs are part of their family, with relationships of trust, respect, teamwork and mutual learning.
The Mahoosuc Land Trust is an accredited community land trust encouraging public interest in conservation in central Oxford County and eastern Coos County, N.H., supporting a balance of growth and conservation and emphasizing sustainable and traditional land uses.
