BETHEL — The Mahoosuc Land Trust continues its 2018 speaker series with an opportunity to experience “A Day in the Life of a Snow Ranger.” The talk will be 7 p.m. Wednesday Feb. 21, at the Shelburne, N.H. Town Hall.
It is jointly sponsored by the Shelburne Trails Club.
The featured speaker will be Helon Hoffer of the Mount Washington Avalanche Center, the only American avalanche center east of the Rockies.
With its rich history of skiing and climbing, it is the oldest backcountry forecasting program in the country.
Helon’s duties include avalanche forecasting and leading Search and Rescue efforts in the Cutler River drainage on the east side of Mount Washington beginning on Dec.r 1 each year through the end of winter avalanche season. He also promotes mountain safety and snow science. Winter climbers and skiers on Mount Washington rely on the vital service provided by Helon and his fellow snow rangers to insure their safety on Mount Washington’s winter slope.
Helon’s presentation will be followed by light refreshments and an opportunity for conversation.
