BRUNSWICK– There’s a dentist in town with a unique request — just call him Dr. Bob.
A 1983 graduate of New York University College of Dentistry, Robert Weigand knew he wanted to be a dentist since he was in the fifth grade, recalling he always enjoyed his dental visits.
In addition, his grandmother was a dental assistant in the 1930s; her career had a profound influence on his decision to study dentistry. She noticed his yearning to pay attention to details and his desire to help people, he recalled, telling him he would make an excellence dentist. Her words still ring true today.
In fact, Weigland uses a clinical microscope with a 19x magnification so he will never miss even the slightest facet.
Weigand began his career in Long Island, N.Y., where his private practice developed and grew into a state-of-the-art dental facility. He served as a clinical assistant professor at the School of Dental Medicine at Stony Brook, later moving to New Hampshire, where he and joined a group practice. Weigand found his way to Maine via Harpswell in 2002, where a colleague’s parents owned a home. He immediately loved the area, visiting yearly, and when he got married in 2011, there was only one special place he wanted to bring his wife. Spending a weekend in a camper at Orr’s Island Campground, she fell in love with Harpswell, too. For three years, they visited Maine on the weekends, making a permanent move to Cundy’s Harbor in 2014.
He and his wife also enjoy sailing, deep-sea fishing, scuba diving, boating and any activities involving the ocean. Coming from a family of seafaring Norwegians, “It’s in my blood,” he says. His grandmother and her nine brothers and sisters were born on an island off of Lillesand, Norway. He describes these islands as very similar to the “365 Islands” in Harpswell. “There has always been a magnet drawing me to Maine,” he said, adding he was “saving the best for last.”
Weigand established Dr. Bob’s Family Dentistry at 80 Pleasant St. in order to bring together a number of essential dental services in one convenient location. The goal is to provide patients with a worry-free, comfortable, dental experience tailored to meet the unique needs of each family member. The staff, he explained, is dedicated to addressing any needs or concerns patients may have.
“We use the most advanced technology to provide the highest quality of care,” he stressed. “Most procedures can be completed right here in our office, saving time from traveling for treatment and allowing us to offer the most comprehensive care possible. Many times there can be several solutions to a dental concern or problem. We will work with you to fully explain all possible options and help you make a fully informed decision on what is best for you and your oral health.”
The facility is one of the most advanced and modern, not only in Maine, but across the United States, he noted. “Because we are committed to providing our patients with the very best in patient care, we dedicate ourselves to taking continuing professional education courses, staying current on industry trends, and employing the latest dental technologies.”
Weigand said the health and well-being of his patients is of primary concern. “We work in concert to create and maintain a caring environment,” he noted. “Mutual respect and collaboration with our patients are fundamental to our practice.”
