RUMFORD — The River Valley Rotary Club unveiled five unexpected awards at its annual holiday party Dec. 18.
The party was held at 49 Franklin St. and attended by about 20 Rotarians and guests.
The first award, presented by the immediate past district governor 7780, Marge Barker, was to the immediate past River Valley Rotary Club president, Dave Duguay, for meeting and exceeding fundraising for the Polio Plus project last year. Duguay had invited a longtime friend as an honorable guest, Regie Arsenault, who has been living with polio since he was 2. Arseneault is a selectman in Mexico, and talked about the importance of the polio vaccine and what it is like living with polio.
The second award was an appreciation award to the entire River Valley Rotary Club for sponsoring and promoting the Community Giving Tree, presented by Michelle Worthley and Melissa McEntee of the Rumford Group Home for the Homeless. There are more than 15 homeless families just in the, and more than 30 homeless families altogether in the group’s system. Worthley and McEntree said the Rotary Club has taken some of the burden off the group and helped lift the spirits of those in need.
The third award, also presented by Worthley and McEntee, was the Super Santa Award to Roger Whitehouse, whose kind giving spirit, they said, has helped spread cheer while encourage the community to participate in donating to the homeless.
The fourth, Rotarian of the Year, was presented by Whitehouse to Club President, Randall Therrien for service above self.
The fifth award, Rotary Citizen of the Year, was presented by Jerry Cohen to fellow Rotarian Catherine Johnson-LaVorgnia.
