NORRIDGEWOCK — The town held a Downtown Stroll and Holiday Tree Lighting Dec. 9, the first of its kind in recent history.
Sponsored by the Norridgewock Area Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the town, area businesses and organizations opened their doors to the public for activities, prizes, giveaways, and promotions. Local organizations gained exposure while hundreds of residents and visitors strolled along Main Street.
As the afternoon passed, snow fell, which created a beautiful setting by which to light the Christmas tree.
In what became the first accumulating snowfall of the season, Town Manager Richard LaBelle welcomed the guests to the downtown area that was previously without a name. Resident Alice Emery bought the property and cleaned it up before donating it to the town in 2014.
With the help of the more than one hundred in attendance, this space was introduced for the first time as Alice E. Emery Town Square. Emery was not able to attend the event, but was honored with a hardy round of applause with the reveal of the newly installed sign honoring her. The town has been working to establish the property as a center for business and recreation in the downtown and to add value to the downtown area.
Chamber of Commerce President Bob Gilcott thanked businesses and organizations for participating in this event. Soon thereafter, Santa Claus was escorted to the downtown by Norridgewock Fire Department.
Santa greeted the many guests — young and old — before lighting the town’s trees. A+ Home Maintenance donated the fir tree planted on the lot, which will hopefully serve as a fixture for many years to come. The large fresh cut tree decked in colored lights was donated by Norridgewock native Leroy Jones.
The event was a success, guests were gracious, and businesses very generous with their community support.
