BOONE, N.C. — Volunteers from the Maine capital area team collectted more than 7,500 gift-filled shoeboxes as part of Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child.
The donations dropped off at locations, mostly area churches, throughout central Maine are being distributed to children in need worldwide, according to a news release from the organization. For many of these children, the shoebox gift will be the first gift they ever receive.
Although collections have finished for the season, there is still time to pack a shoebox gift online for children affected by war, disease, disaster, poverty and famine. Visit samaritanspurse.org/buildonline to select gifts matched to a child’s specific age and gender, then finish packing the virtual shoebox by adding a photo and personal note of encouragement. Monetary donatins are also accepted.
Samaritan’s Purse is an international Christian relief and evangelism organization headed by Franklin Graham. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has collected and delivered more than 146 million gift-filled shoeboxes to children in more than 160 countries and territories, according to the release.
