NEWRY — Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation has announced retired Navy officer Alex Carr was hired as the new director of philanthropy; his first day on the job was Sept. 15.
The selection was made after a competitive search and selection process.
Carr will be Maine Adaptive’s first staff member dedicated exclusively to prospect development, donor outreach, and all aspects of fundraising.
Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation is a nonprofit organization providing and promoting year-round adaptive recreation for people with disabilities, age 4 to adult.
“Maine Adaptive is embarking on an exciting period of strategic growth over the next five years,” noted executive director Barbara Schneider. “The first steps in that process include completing a strategic review of our programs and relationships with a variety of stakeholders and building the financial framework to support new initiatives. Alex has a strong history of leadership in public service and outdoor sports and recreation. He is a consummate sportsman who participates in every sport in the Maine Adaptive program and has outdoor leadership and certifications to match. He has a strong background in volunteer management, budgeting and funding for outdoor recreation and a lifelong commitment to service”.
Carr retired from the U.S. Navy in 2013. His career as a Naval flight officer included five overseas deployments as a mission commander in the E-2C Hawkeye as well as a tour of duty as a mission commander on the NATO E-3A AWACS in Germany. Following his naval career, Carr relocated to North Yarmouth, where he volunteered as a firefighter and emergency medical technician. Additionally, he served on the North Yarmouth board of selectmen and as its chairman in 2015. In addition to his volunteer work, Carr has built an extensive portfolio of work in outdoor sports. He is a Professional Ski Instructors of America Alpine Level II instructor, bicycle guide and wilderness emergency medical technician. Carr is a native Mainer, having grown up in Hanover and Portland. He attended Bethel and Rumford schools, eventually graduating from Portland High School in 1987. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business from Boston University and a master’s from the Naval War College. Carr resides in of Newry, living on the mountain at Sunday River, where he learned to ski.

I am especially thrilled to support the participants and volunteers that really make this great organization work,” he remarked. “I have been a mission focused person all my life, and nothing speaks to me like the mission of Maine Adaptive Sports & Recreation. I love outdoor sports, coaching and Maine. This position allows me to participate from start to finish, bringing the exhilaration of outdoor sports to people who might not otherwise get the chance.”
