NEWRY — Barbara Kingsolver wrote a book, “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle,” in which she describes the life she and her family lived when they became “locavores,” eating only food they could get within a 100-mile radius of their house for an entire year.
The story is full of their challenges, successes, dreams, and desires — and is a great read. Could you do it living in western Maine? No avocados, no orange juice, no bananas?
The Eddy School will look at the idea of being a locavore as part of its fall health curriculum.
Students will research and meet local farmers and plan a variety of menus that meet the 100-mile radius goal.
The students will have a presentation from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 20, when area residents can see the fruits of their labor and the menus they created. While at the school, visitors can meet many of the local farmers who produce the food that would be needed to be a successful locavore. Learn about the school, meet the students, meet the farmers, try their produce, and try some locavore snacks the students will prepare.
