Mad Science, Holman Day poetry, July 25 at Rangeley Maine Public Library

RANGELEY — Mad Science and the poetry of Maine writer Holman Day will both be featured at the Rangeley Public Library on Wednesday, July 25.

Sounds Like Science, for kids of all ages, will be at 10 a.m. at the library, which is at 7 Lake St.
Pitch, frequency, vibrations and other things science will be explained in an ear-pleasing show about the science of sounds presented by Mad Science of Maine. Prepare to be perplexed, hear light, explore sound as it travels through solids, liquids and gases, and listen to the beautiful tones coming from resonance tubes. Take a trip through the jungle as we recreate the sounds of several animals. Find out how hot sound can be as it rises out of our “singing pipe.” After some thunderous applause, the Mad Science conductor will need your help to recreate an indoor thunder storm.
At 6 p.m., there will be a presentation about Maine poet Holman Day who between 1900 and 1905 published three widely read books of poetry capturing the spirit of crusty old New Englanders from a bygone era. In the introduction to “Up in Maine,” Day’s first collection of poems, C. E. Littlefield writes in the introduction that “the stubborn strength of Plymouth Rock is nowhere better exemplified than on the Maine farm, in the Maine woods, on the Maine coast, or in the Maine workshop” from which Holman Day drew his inspiration for his stories in verse.
Peter Beckford will be at the Rangeley Public Library for an hour-long recitation of Holman Day poems, interspersed with some Maine history.
Both shows are free, but a place should be reserved by calling the library at 207-864-5529 or stopping by to sign up.
