Orcutt talk one of many vacation events at Carrabassett Valley library

CARRABASSETT VALLEY — Nature photographers John and Cynthia Orcutt will speak at the Carrabassett Valley Library at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, just one of several vacation week events at the library.
They have spent the better part of the last decade exploring Maine’s High Peaks, camera in hand. Assembled for the first time in the book “Enduring Heights,” more than 90 of their fine art photographs reveal the many moods of the stunning landscape; breathtakingly elegant yet rugged and remote.

Following a distinguished career as an architect and landscape architect team, the Orcutts, of Kingfield and Portland, have pursued their interest in highlighting the need for active preservation of fragile places. Through their photographic images, they express the inherent beauty of areas endangered by public access and frequent visitation, according to the library.
Also scheduled for school vacation week:
4:30 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 20, Chewonki: Owls of Maine, the habitats and adaptations of Maine’s Native Owls. Live nonreleasable owls are the highlights of the program, which begins with slides and sounds to learn the different appearances and calls of each owl. Then, using talons, wings, and skulls, participants explore the adaptations of the silent nocturnal hunters. The Owls of Maine program provides the opportunity to handle unique specimens, Seating is limited, reservations are recommended.
4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21, the film “Defoe’s Way,” will be shown.
Legendary wilderness teacher Gardner Defoe and 15 of his students, new and old, unite from all across the country for one last canoe trip on Maine’s remote Allagash River.
