Pet Talk with Turner Vet Service: Be informed about pet medication

By Rhonda Baillargeon, LVT

TURNER — As hard as we try to keep our pets safe and healthy, there may come a time when medication is needed. Dogs and cats can be given preventive medication on a regular schedule (such as heartworm prevention, deworming medication, and flea and tick products) and sometimes they need treatment for specific illnesses and diseases.

Medication can be in tablet, chewable tablet, capsule, liquid or gel form. Be sure to get details about how to give medication from your veterinarian because some medication should be given on an empty stomach or are not absorbed properly when given with certain foods.
You should always be given information about the drugs being prescribed for your pet. These details include the name and type of medication, what condition it is treating, directions for administering the medication (quantity per dose, how many times a day, and for how long) and potential side effects. It is important to follow the instructions closely, because health problems may not resolve or even worsen if a medication is not given as prescribed. If you have difficulty administering a medication, contact your veterinarian to see if there are other options. Some medications can be reformulated from tablets or capsules into flavored liquids or gels that can be easier for you to administer at home.
Many people shop online or at their own pharmacy for medication for their pets. There are several excellent websites that offer pet medication, but make sure to do your homework. Online pet pharmacies are required to follow the same rules as pharmacies supplying medication for people. Be sure the pharmacy you choose has been accredited by the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. Check to make sure that the manufacturer of the specific medication will stand behind products that are supplied by the pharmacy. If not, they may not guarantee the product if there are any problems.
Some brick and mortar pharmacies carry pet products as well, but again, check to make sure the manufacturer’s guarantee will apply to the medication. Some veterinarians have online stores and can provide the same products they are prescribing. The products come from reputable sources and are guaranteed by the manufacturers. Frequently, manufacturers supply veterinarians with coupons or rebates that can help to reduce the cost of certain medication. The promotions may not apply when products are purchased from other sources. Talk with your veterinarian to decide on the best source for your pet’s medication.
