West Point cadet, grandson of North Turner family, wins national boxing title

LAWRENCEBURG, Ind. — West Point cadet Matthew Davey Whitcomb beat Navy midshipman Reggie Miles in a second round TKO to win the 2017 National Collegiate Boxing Tournament heavyweight belt April 8. The West Point cadet is the grandson of Bill and Toddy Whitcomb Kilbreth of North Turner, Maine. West Point claimed the National Collegiate Boxing Team Title, in part because of Whitcomb’s win at the National Collegiate Boxing Association finals.

During three years of Army West Point boxing experiences, Whitcomb attributes his current boxing success to West Point’s supportive, expert coaching staff, the team’s tight brotherhood and their motto, “Never Quit.” Whitcomb is a native of Massena, N.Y., the son of Brent and Elaine Whitcomb and, in addition to the Kilbreths, is the grandson of W. Harney Davey of Keeseville, N.Y.
