Protecting your money

Protecting your money
By Jason Alderman
“If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
How many times have you heard that expression? Even in favorable economic times, otherwise cautious people can be duped by get-rich-quick schemes or investments that promise unrealistic returns. But when times get hard, folks increasingly fall for these scams in their quest to make ends meet.
Many people, feeling overwhelmed by the complexity of the subject matter, hire a financial planning professional for advice. However, as recent headlines have shown, even highly regarded investment experts sometimes turn out to be con artists simply peddling the latest Ponzi scheme.
So how can you protect and grow your assets and plan for your financial future?
First, educate yourself. There’s a wealth of information available online, at libraries, bookstores or your local community college. Get grounded in basic financial concepts such as:
• The importance of saving for short- and long-term goals
• Managing debt
• Creating and living within a budget
• How banking, credit and loan products work
• Why credit scores are so important
• Planning for unexpected events
Don’t go it alone. Why not form a book club/discussion group where you can share financial fears, missteps and success stories with mutually supportive friends? It’s sometimes easier to digest information and make action plans together. A good place to start is by reading “The Difference: How Anyone Can Prosper in Even the Toughest Times,” by best-selling author and “Today Show” finance editor Jean Chatzky.
Finally, don’t rule out consulting with a financial planner. Even if you can’t afford ongoing money-management services, consider hiring a third party temporarily to help you crystallize your financial goals and trouble-shoot areas where you may be lacking, such as retirement savings, estate planning or having adequate insurance protection.
Many types of professionals call themselves financial planners but they don’t all have the same training or specialties. Different groups that certify planners have their own credentialing requirements, regulators and ethical guidelines, but education and experience requirements vary.
If necessary, interview several candidates until you find someone you trust, who asks pertinent questions about your situation, and who won’t try to sell you unneeded products or services. Ask for references, and make sure he or she is registered with the North American Securities Administrators Association
Update on Noah and Family..
Jun/090
Hi there. I spoke with Jen I believe it was last week about needing to update on Noah. IT has been crazy around here, but good crazy. I updated on the cause last night but I thought I would also send you a copy so you can use it any way you needed too. ALso THANK you so very much for helping us by publishing our story in the paper. It has been amazing with the turnout. If you have any questions you are more then welcome to email me as well. THank you again.
Baby Noah Update
Im sorry its been a while since I have updated you all on Noah. We are HOME:):) Yes, I mean home as in Augusta, Maine. We came home late Friday the 12th. We have been busy with follow up dr’s appointments with the pediatrician, cardiologists, soon with the Neurologist, and already a trip back to Boston. We have been also spending time with the kids, and making sure we spend time with our families.
Noah was sent home with a catheter, (although we had thought we were not going to have too) due to the fact that Noah isnt able to pee out the tip of the penis, however only more so at the base of the penis (there is a hole there due to a fistula). We were home for 2 days and we noticed he was not peeing out his catheter, however out the hole at the penis. After talking to the Dr and getting the “lets observe him” speech thats what we did for three more days. Then, after seeing Noah become more fussy (which is never was) we called again and spoke to the dr. After hearing that NOah wasnt doing well they had us travel to Boston on Thursday instead of waiting until this week. SO we went to Boston. The Dr took out the catheter and even though he still isnt able to pee out the tip of the penis, he is at least happier and not in so much pain. ![]()
We have also seen a cardiologist while being at home. They performed an Echo cardiogram and determined Noah;s heart is fine. He determined that Noah will either have a high heart rate, or that the heart rate could indicate he is having Seizures and wanted us to have an MRI sooner. SO this week we will visit with a neurologist and Noah will undergo an EEG to see if there is any seizure activities. This could be caused by the sturge weber syndrome we have talked about. We are praying that he is goinbg to be just fine.
We will also be meeting with the Dermatologist next month in Boston to start the documentation we will need in order to do the laser at the age of 6 months.
We will also be needing to go back to Boston next month to have an ultra sound of the abdomen to make sure that Noah;s kidneys are doing ok. We have to be careful of the amount of flashback (urine) that enters the kidneys. So then the Dr will determine if we have to have another surgery sooner then planned to fix the fistula as well as making sure everything else is ok.
So with our trips to Boston, and our Trips to portland and waterville, we have a pretty busy summer planned. But, we will be making it a point to get the kids out camping this vacation.
WE were able to make it to the spaghetti dinner, and we were so very blessed with the turnout. Thank you to all that were able to make it, and also a thank you for all the donations to help us out. We are very blessed and so very thankful! The support is overwhelming and welcomed! We have been wondering how we were going to be going back and forth from drs appointments and with me not able to go back to work for a long while, this make it easier for the next few months.
So for now, we are home. We are all happy, and doing well. Thank you for your emails, your thoughts and your prayers. We will continue to update, and we will be updating with some pictures soon. Noah is a happy little boy and we are so thankful we have him home! We are happy to finally be a real family:)
Thanks again, Nathalie and Quillin and Noah Lutz
Where to begin?!!?
Jun/090
Well the good news is the family is making plans to come home hopefully today or tomorrow! This is weeks sooner than expected. The sad news is that yesterday the family found out that Noah’s surgery to fix the urethra in his penis did not completely work. There is a leak in the tubing as well as flashback into the kidneys. Noah and his family will have to go back to Boston in one week for another surgery. They will be in the hospital again for around a week, maybe longer. Initially they were told if the surgery went well, they would not have to go back for another 5 weeks. Noah will have to keep one of the catheters for a while, which is something they were hoping to not have to do. The family is pretty discouraged that Noah will need another surgery so soon and that they will be back in Boston at the hospital again so soon.
Noah is also having some problems with a really high heart rate and blood pressure but they are continuing to monitor this.
Noah was taken out of traction yesterday morning and mom and dad were finally able to hold him and move around with him. So this is good!! Noah is a very loving child, he moves toward his mom, dad and brother and sister when they lay next to him. He loves cuddling!!
Today they are hopefully going to have an ultrasound of his kidney. He will need more tests as time goes on.
So while the family is really excited to be coming home, they are seeing this more as a break between hospital stays. They are happy to be going home, to be living in their home with their children, but are discouraged it’s only for a short time before they head back to the hospital, so far away.
The family continues to struggle financially and with many trips and hospitals stays on the horizon, the outlook of financially stability is bleak.
Along with the Benefit Supper and Silent Auction, Winterport Dragway will be holding their own fundraiser for Noah on Sunday. They will be collecting donations to benefit Noah and his family. Big THANK YOU to Matt Lang and the Winterport Dragway!
I also want to extend a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone that has donated food, money, time and effort to make these fundraising activities a success and to make this family’s life less stressful. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!
Update on Noah Porter Lutz
Jun/090
Noah’s surgery took place on Saturday May 23. After a 9 hour surgery they were able to evaluate his bladder and found that it was in tact, they closed the hole in his abdomen, repaired his hips that were not fully developed, and were able to reconstruct his penis with tubing for his urethra which was missing. The medical term for the bladder issue is Bladder Exstrophy. Noah had multiple catheters going in and out of his bladder, all gathering through the belly button they had to make for him.
Noah was supposed to be in traction (with his hips at a 90 deg angle with his legs straight up) for 2 to 3 weeks to allow his hips a chance to heal and form properly. The surgeons are talking about taking him out of traction on June 10, days early.
Noah has had the catheters removed one by one and only one remains. He will have this one until they leave the hospital to go home. They will not know if his urethra is functioning properly until they test it by clamping off the catheter next week.
Nathalie meets with the dermatologist later today about laser treatments for the port wine stain on his face. She is discussing with the neurologist having an MRI done and an EEG done on Noah to find out if there has been any brain damage thus far from the port wine stain. If Noah has Sturge Weber Syndrome, which some children get when they have a port wine stain, it is possible that he could have seizures in his first year of life. This syndrome also has other side effects, such as blindness and/or glaucoma.
Overall Noah’s progress is good. He is making gains and is doing better than expected. He has a long road ahead of him. He will most likely need surgeries between the ages of 3 and 7 years old to assist with any issues of incontinence that are likely to arise and what the doctors call “flashback”. This is when the urine does not go into the bladder but pushes back into the kidneys causing infection. There will also be multiple trips to Boston for the laser surgery at least in the next few years.
The planning for the Benefit Spaghetti Supper and Silent Auction is going great and is scheduled for Saturday June 13, 2009 from 4 to 7pm. It is being held at the Brown Memorial United Methodist Church at 36 Church Street, Clinton, ME. Clinton is Nathalie’s home town. We have had numerous donations from area businesses, family, friends and strangers. We are still in need of more donations to raise as much financial support for this family as possible.
